Aside from the front desk receptionist treating the Westin like it's a Courtyard or budget hotel, I have major complaints about this stay. I sent the below email a week ago to the leadership team with no response, so I am posting it here:
Hello, I am writing now that I have traveled home about my recent stay after checking out today.
Attaching pictures of a bed bug crawling on my pillow on Monday, August 18 around 8:00am.
Please confirm receipt and if I can schedule time to speak to a manager this week during business hours?
I recently stayed with Westin Book Cadillac to celebrate my bachelorette party and found the experience with hotel management very disappointing. I booked three rooms several months in advance with a request that they be adjoining rooms so our party could stay together without disruption. When we arrived at check in, my group was told only one of our rooms were prepared and that the other two would be ready shortly. After waiting for another hour or so, we were then told the second room was being given a final check by housekeeping, however, a senior manager informed us the third room was occupied and they were “waiting for the guests to leave.” More time passed after this and our group eventually accepted two other rooms in different locations on the same floor. Although, this was only after we were told it’s our fault the rooms weren’t ready specifically because we asked for adjoining rooms. When we finally made it to those rooms, we were surprised to find that they were single, king bed rooms, when the rooms we booked were supposed to include a pull out bed in addition. For that reason, we had three people sleeping in one bed in each room! There was no explanation for this other than being told the hotel was “fully committed” for the night. While these changes would have easily been forgiven, the harsh and condescending demeanor that came from senior management made it difficult to do so. There was no apology for the delay or the inconvenience. The quality of the rooms were not an issue and the valet/bellhop staff were great, and yet this stay was the most stressful part of what is supposed to be a fun weekend of Detroit excursions. Considering the football game, baseball game and concert that were taking place downtown during our visit, I’m sure this was a very busy weekend for the Westin, but it was made clear that our visitor-ship was not important to management here and our booking well in advance of this trip made no difference. I would be extremely hesitant to return.
Good location, downtown easy walking and parking within two blocks. Rooms had limited views of the other side of the building, but not worth the price. There is no Grand lobby or Grand entrance. I think they really missed the mark on that so even though it’s nice it’s new it’s clean. It doesn’t feel like a grand hotel.
Let's start with the good: - The beds at this hotel are super comfortable - Contrary to others, the valet parking was great. It's a 3rd party that parks your car but they were fantastic for us. It's $45 and there's no other option with the hotel. Everything else is a self park. So it's good and bad. - Beautiful marble tile shower - Clean room - Pool was decent - Gym has everything you need - Location was pretty good - Water refill station in lobby
The bad: - Check in was extremely late, the first time a hotel couldn't check me in a bit early. I requested an upgrade if possible, since we're Gold, but all we got was a late check-in and didn't get any upgrade. - We were gone 7 hours (9-4) on the Sunday and no one came and made up our room. I don't understand the lack of service at this hotel. So we had to request all new towels and what not. - The lady at check-out seemed uninterested in our stay. - The King bed seemed like it was small. - The bathroom shower was incredibly dark, no light in the shower. - Thin walls, can hear noise easily. - The location is good but going the other way, is a block away from sketchiness. - The room was on the smaller side. - Terrible views from the room
The sole reason we booked over the David Whitney hotel was because of the pool, but we won't be staying here again. Very overrated.
Beautiful hotel, great location. Front desk and valets were wonderful. We very much enjoyed the pool and hot tub, both well maintained and daily large. Our room was spotless. I would definitely stay again on my next trip to Detroit. I would like to add that the valet staff was very fast at bringing our car around. I was a bit concerned after reading other reviews, but there was a large valet staff that was fast and efficient, as well as friendly.
I recently stayed at The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit, and while I had some positive experiences, there were also a few aspects that left me a bit disappointed.
First off, the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Everyone I interacted with was welcoming, which made the overall experience more enjoyable. The hotel itself is stunning, and it's clear that it has a rich historical background. You can feel the history as you walk through the building, with the architecture and design telling a story of its past.
However, I did have a few concerns. The fitness center was much smaller than I expected, especially considering the size of the building. It was clear that the gym had been added in recent decades, likely within the past 50 years, as it didn’t quite align with the grandness of the rest of the hotel. If you’re someone who prioritizes a larger fitness space, this might be a letdown.
Another issue I encountered was the smell of pot intermittently throughout the building. As someone who has asthma and is sensitive to this, it was uncomfortable and surprising. I’m not sure if it's legal to smoke marijuana inside buildings in Michigan, but I feel that it should not be allowed in a hotel, especially one with such a prestigious reputation. This definitely impacted my overall comfort during my stay.
In conclusion, while the hotel staff and historical charm were a highlight, the small fitness center and the occasional unpleasant smell detracted from what could have been a more positive experience. I’d recommend it with some reservations for those who may be sensitive to those types of issues.
The Westin Book Detroit exceeded my expectations. I was pleasantly surprised by how modern, nice, and clean it was. The welcome experience and first impression were exactly where they needed to be. The only minor downside was some confusion about where to check in. I wandered around the first floor before realizing that the check-in desk is located on the second floor. A sign or clear directions would have been helpful.
Checking in went smoothly, and my room turned out to be very spacious, with a view of downtown Detroit. I could even catch glimpses of Canada between some of the buildings, which was pretty neat. The room itself was clean and modern, and I especially loved the waterfall showerhead in the bathroom. I have no complaints about the room at all. As a Marriott Platinum member, I also received a welcome basket shortly after arriving, which included chips, sodas, chocolates, and trail mix. It was a thoughtful touch that made me feel appreciated.
I did not have much time to explore the rest of the hotel, but I noticed a few bars and restaurants on the property. I imagine the gym is also well equipped, though I did not have time to check it out. Overall, I really enjoyed my brief stay at The Westin Book Detroit. It met and exceeded many of my expectations, and I believe others would enjoy their time here as well.
Upon entering the room, I immediately noticed hair all over the bathroom sink, which I personally had to sanitize and wipe down myself. The shower was in such an unsanitary condition that there was nothing I could have done to make it usable. Because of this, neither my husband nor I bathed during our stay. Additionally, the bed was extremely uncomfortable hard as a brick and made it nearly impossible to rest properly.
When I attempted to address these concerns with the manager, instead of listening or showing any empathy, he argued with me. I called the front desk multiple times through the night and he claimed there was no record of it when I know what I did. I have no reason to lie, nor is money an issue for me it’s the principle of what took place. I also asked him to retrieve my MAC lip liner that had fallen behind the desk since he said it was so clean and he checked everything thoroughly with a three list check, but I never received a response, which makes me feel as though it was ignored or intentionally not returned.
The staff and bar tender were very hospitable. The only thing I found a bit misleading is the shower online looked a lot fancier. The location was good.
Great hotel! Very cute, cozy and artsy. Best to book via another site (much better pricing) than thru the hotel itself. So far, its been a very nice stay.
I stayed at the Trumbull and Porter Hotel for three nights and not once was my room serviced—despite asking the front desk every single morning for housekeeping. No fresh towels, no trash removal, nothing. Just empty promises from a staff that was visibly overwhelmed and untrained. When I checked in, the employee helping me was nearly in tears from stress. That should have been the first red flag.
To make matters worse, room rates were jacked up to over $600 a night due to a conference in town—completely unjustifiable given the absolute lack of service or basic amenities. The air conditioning unit in my room sounded like it was on the verge of combustion—loud, rattling, and impossible to sleep through.
I wrote to the manager about these issues after my stay and received no reply. Not even the courtesy of an acknowledgment. Clearly, management is just as indifferent as the staff on the ground.
This place is a disaster—overpriced, neglected, and utterly mismanaged. Save yourself the headache and stay literally anywhere else. I will never be back.
My room was on the third floor and very humid. The floors are concrete. I kept my air on 67 degrees for the 4 nights I stayed and the room was very moist. My clothes that I packed even felt moist. The tub doesn’t drain well and the water just sits while you take a shower. I got the king superior room and it was decent. I love the location of the hotel and that’s the only reason I would book again. The bar is open sometimes when the lady feel a like opening it. Breakfast is able to be bought at the breakfast bar from 7am-11am. The parking cost and anything you get from the store in the hotel will be taken out of the security deposit that you put down. Bikes are also free to rent as long as you bring them back. The courtyard is very nice and has a few games out there and sometimes there is a bonfire. Don’t expect the most from this hotel because of the price, the hotel is in a very nice location. All of the places that I planned to go to were 6 minutes or less from the hotel. Room service you will have to request because they will not come into your room unless requested. Overall a pretty good hotel but has many flaws.
Room was clean. Bed decent. Travelling for work wanted to order food in, but apparently you can't get any delivery in Detroit on a busy evening. Front desk unattentive and uninterested in assisting me with good local choices. Spent 3 hours on Google and calling restaurants to no avail! Driving around wasn't much help as the fine dining was all booked. Only hotel I've ever stayed at without a what's near by print out or booklet. Worse the way the first attendant never put down his book or how 2nd attendant told me to use Google.
