Don't believe 5 person occupancy that is listed on website. Not all rooms have couch or allow a roll-away. Was told to put three kids in a bed. Beds are comfortable. Many of the fixtures are rusting. Front desk staff are helpful when you can get them off of their cell phones. Housekeeping, if you ask for it. Extra unexplained charges that had to be argued. Pool was the highlight, great for kids.

There is absolutely no buffet for breakfast, the juice AND milk were left out for 3 hours, not even sitting on ice! Whoever ran the breakfast on 8-18-25 acted like working was an inconvenience for her. And the pool was DISGUSTING! I will never be back or recommend this place to anyone! Which does suck for the staff that was actually helpful throughout the night.

I don’t know if I just had high hopes, but our room stunk, and the biggest part of the pool was closed down while we were here.

The main draw was the pool for sure. VERY humid in the pool/bar area. The room (which was overlooking the pool) was surprisingly not too bad. Had to fight for quite a while to get the TVs to work. As we were walking in with our luggage, there was an employee smoking in the lounge and yelling at the gentleman behind the desk. Not a great start. Breakfast was a decent spread and the kids enjoyed it.

We had the same problems as everyone else. We had 2 rooms booked, only one room was ready originally. Our first room was ok. The 2nd one that wasn't ready, (167) we got in and noticed it had mold on one of the beds and on the carpet in front of and under the dresser. The bedding looked old and ripped. The bathroom door had an inch gap when it was closed, you could see handprints on the wall like someone had touched it with a wet hand and the mark remained. Brown stuff along the cord covers, spiderwebs in the corners, missing a closet door.

Staff was polite when we told them and moved us to another room (255). When we moved to another room the cleanliness was better however the AC didn't work, was basically just a fan. Bathroom door didn't open all the way. Finally got TV working by switching it to a different source.

The whole hotel for the most part just felt moist and smelled like a basement. Shower water got warm for about 15 minutes then was cold. (oddly it was warmer coming out of the tub faucet (there isn't a tub but the faucet is there) but was cold when switched to shower. Floor got we because there aren't shower doors.

The slide pool was warm, the other pool was a little chilly but not cold, it was a little cloudy. There was a lot of hair and dirt on the steps up to the slides.

We got pizza from the bar and it was ready in 15 min and tasted great.

Come for the pool, my son had a blast. Good for families, going to be the most fun for kids 9 and younger. Max depth 4? Pool and slides are great. TV came on but no guide or channels, mentioned to staff but never saw anyone. Wasn’t a big deal to us. The room bathroom door was inoperable however, it was a slider, no handle and needed two hands to lift and partially close or open. Couldn’t close all the way without potentially trapping my 9 year old in there. Would come back again, good value if coming for the pool.

If I could give this place a 0 I would. RUN from this place, don't walk. And delete it from your browser.

I made the mistake to not read the reviews and never again will I make that mistake. I was traveling with my kids and saw the pool and thought how exciting it would be for them, so I booked. I cannot explain enough how awful and disgusting this hotel is. The room smelled horrible of musty watered carpet. There were stains all over the floor and walls. Dirt and scum everywhere. Our bedding was stained and had what appeared to be smeared poop on it. There were crumbs all over the place and hair in the tub. Lights were broke and the television didn't work. I could literally keep going. I left and went to a different hotel. After showing the staff pictures of the room, I was assured I would not be charged for the room, and sure enough I was charged. I have now spent two days trying to reach someone and it just rings with a mailbox is full message. I've called Wyndham direct and they just guide me back to the hotel. It's been an absolute nightmare.

Do not stay here! I can't believe this place is even in business.

The lifeguards were excellent, very attentive and on point with safety, which made the water park experience feel secure and enjoyable. The pool area was clean and well maintained, a definite highlight. Despite being clearly understaffed, the team remained incredibly friendly and worked hard to make our stay comfortable. Their positive attitude really stood out, even with the challenges they faced. With a bit more support and a few updates, this hotel has great potential, especially for families. The staff had a great attitude and were doing their best, even though it was clear they were short-staffed. They stayed friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The hotel has a lot of potential, especially for families looking to enjoy the water park—it’s a fun feature that kids will love! Breakfast was simple, mostly cereal, which could use some variety and fresher options. Some essentials like towels and other room supplies ran low at times, and front desk availability was a bit inconsistent. With a few updates and better staffing, this place could really shine as a top family destination.

My husband and I stayed her last night for the Iowa State Fair. The lobby was very clean. However, the room we stayed in was really disgusting. There was mold on the lamp shade, the AC unit smelt like it was going to catch on fire, the light in the bathroom did not work. The walls are paper thin, we could hear everything our neighbor said and did. The hotel smelt like cigarettes and weed. The water tasted like salt. The shower head barely works. There was a lot of trash behind the bed(we were trying to find an outlet) Also, there is only 3 outlets in the entire room and they were all being used by lamps.

Stayed for a night. Big room with clean beds, clean bed sheets and a clean toilet. The furniture and fixtures looked new and gave a good feeling. Breakfast was continental and supplied periodically. Family loved it. Only con, the toilet was a bit small

Do not waste your money. The beds are horrible, the worst excuse of 3 tiny lumpy pillows per bed. The bathroom light didn't work. The bathroom door didn't close all the way and got stuck when I tried to make it close. Spider crawled across the bathroom floor. It smells weird. Im afraid to sleep in the bed.

On Saturday, we visited Adventureland. It took about 20 minutes due to the traffic. Checked in early at 1pm; the front desk staff kindly removed the early check-in fee. He also recommended an Indian restaurant since we enjoy Indian cuisine. He provided us with free soda and snacks. He provided us with a 10% discount coupon for their liquor shop.
The room was tidy and had a pleasant fragrance from the clean linens. There was no soap in the room, but it was okay. Breakfast was satisfactory. We had a brief meal and departed. At checkout, we offered a tip to the front desk representative for his hospitality, but he declined and suggested we give it to the housekeeper instead. He recommended booking directly with the hotel next time and had us sign up for a travel pass.

This is by far the best motel for the money in the Des Moines area, I don't think most people are familiar with the name . However they are building a brand that has the customer in mind! I travel quite a bit and during the last year I've gotten to know most of the employees as they excel in customer service The manager goes out of his way to make sure your satisfied and get this! They serve waffles, eggs, cereal, sausage 7 days a week for breakfast! Who does that!? Sonesta essential does try them out.

The rooms are newly remodeled and in excellent shape (see pictures). Vi at the front desk is professional and helpful. I think this Sonesta Essentials positions itself well in the market: better than Super 8, better price (and location!) than e.g. an area Hampton Inn at a higher price...and the Sonesta has impeccable rooms.

As for previous reviewers complaining about a limited breakfast: you can pay $40-$60 more at another chain and get a better breakfast. Personally, I don't want much for breakfast, I just eat too much when a great breakfast is provided.

This hotel provides great value. People shouldn't be rated based on Ritz-Carlton level expectations. If you want a Ritz-Carlton, go stay at a Ritz-Carlton at 10 times the price.

I'd stay here again.

Safe to say this hotel looked clean upon walking into the lobby but the rooms were extremely gross. The first room I was in had several stains on different items. There was trash under the bed. The fridge had what appeared to be mold inside. I called the front desk to see if I could switch rooms. The front desk took new key cards wrote a new room number on them then just walked away leaving them behind the counter. After he finally returned he gave me the keys and I went to find my new room. This room was much cleaner than the first but still not great. The worst part of this room was that I noticed a spot on the middle of the comforter. I swiped my hand across it thinking that it might have just been a shadow but this said spot was sticky. Upon removal of the top layer there was several strands of hair under the main layer of bedding. I would not recommend this location at all. I would rate less than the one star if possible.
